TORONTO NATIONALS WIN MLL CHAMPIONSHIP 10-9 AGAINST DENVER

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- Shawn Williams scored twice in the fourth quarter as the Toronto Nationals won their first ever Major League Lacrosse championship 10-9 Sunday against the Denver Outlaws.
Down 8-7 after three quarters, Toronto's John Grant Jr. scored his second goal of the day less than a minute into the fourth to tie it up 8-8.
Seven minutes later, the Outlaws' Josh Sims added his second of the day on a power play to give Denver the lead.
Williams scored with less than five minutes left to give Toronto hope, and then he sealed the championship by scoring in the final 45 seconds.
Jeff Zywicki led Toronto with three goals and Merrick Thomson, the playoff MVP, added two.
Brendan Mundorf scored three for Denver, while Brian Langtry, Mike Ward, Jeff Sonke and Matt Brown each added singles.
Toronto netminders Doc Schneider and Brett Queener combined for 23 saves while at the other end Jesse Schwartzman stopped 14 for the Outlaws.
The Nationals were 7-5 during the regular season, and beat the Long Island Lizards on Saturday to reach the final.

Uniondale, NY--For only the second time this month the Lizards will leave Long Island and travel to play the Denver Outlaws on July 25th at 7 p.m. at INVESCO FIELD at Mile High Stadium. The Lizards look for revenge after losing to the Outlaws earlier this season, 16-9, on June 13th.
The Long Island Lizards were shown a tremendous amount of support this past weekend at their home field at Hofstra Shuart Stadium, recording their largest crowd yet with 7, 621 fans. Despite their best efforts, the Lizards fell to the Toronto Nationals, 16-9. Keith Cromwell scored an impressive four goals throughout the duration of the game bringing his season-recorded goals to eight. Captain Tim Goettlemann and teammate Matt Zash each added two goals to the scoreboard for the team. Midfielder Stephen Peyser continued his hot scoring streak by adding one goal and one assist; he has registered at least one point in every game he has played.
The Denver Outlaws made an impressive comeback against the Washington Bayhawks this past Saturday with a strong overall team effort. Goalie Jesse Schwartzaman recorded 22 saves and a shutout fourth quarter, which helped his team achieve their victory. Drew Westervelt was the scoring leader for the game recording four goals throughout the four quarters. With back-and-fourth scoring during the game, the Outlaws made their comeback during the fourth with five consecutive unanswered goals for the win.
In their last meeting on June 13th, the Lizards fell short to the Outlaws with a 16-9 loss in an intense game resulting in 15 penalties. The Lizards put up a fight with Peyser leading them offensively with two goals and one assist. Helping in the effort was rookie Zack Greer along with Stephen Berger who each scored two goals. Goettelmann, Matt Danowski and Peter Vlahakis each recorded one goal apiece in the loss.
The Outlaws lead the all time game series 3-0. Before the game on June 13th the teams had not played each other since 2007. Goettelmann leads all of the Lizards players in scoring against the Outlaws with ten points (7 G, 3 A). Denver and Long Island have the top two defensive units in the MLL as they have allowed the least amount of goals in their nine games.
After an extremely physical game on June 13th the Lizards look for redemption and hope to secure their first ever win against the Outlaws.
